Unmaintained GitHub repos

There is too much content out there covering FOSS as an alternative to commercial apps.

This is a good thing if you consider the ever growing presence of apps that contribute to Surveillance Capitalism or even oppressive government regimes.

The problem is when you find true pearls like GoFOSS.net just to realize that some of their suggestions point to apps that are no longer maintained.

You visit their repo in GitHub and see the big header right in the readme.

“Unmaintained”

Ask any marketeer about this “process” and you’ll get a “It’s a shame!” in response. How come do you allow a potential user to go down steps into the adoption funnel just to leave him/her empty handed?

From my own experience I can tell you: it sucks.

In order to alleviate this issue, maintainers should consider implementing status badges that could be embedded to any webpage that makes reference to that particular app.

This simple act would help not only please the general audience but also website content publishers who would know when it’s time to update their pages to reflect the apps which are current available to use.

From my part, I’d be glad to add those snippets into my resources page https://rodolphoarruda.pro.br/recursos/ , each one next to the link to the app website, so I won’t frustrate anyone nor make my page feel too dated.
