I just finished reading the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy by Liu Cixin. The 3 books of the now famous “3 Body Problem”.
A massive read of 1500 pages that took me 7 months to complete.
I loved it, but I can only recommend it to the absolute fans of science fiction.
It is not the science fiction to impress the laymen and sell millions of copies in the mainstream market. It’s a masterpiece crafted for people who know science enough to enjoy the details.
I’m not that kind of person, though. I’m more attached to the human philosophical side of things. I’m looking for the big ideas or concepts behind science fiction books.
Also important: this is not an westerner author. No. He is Chinese and has a very peculiar mindset which is expressed in his work through a mixture of respect to tradition, the way of living in a very state controlled nation like China and forward thinking into the future of humanity.
The most interesting aspects for me in the three books are:
- the value given to education and excellence
- being high-tech is a given. You should always look for the best available tech for your use.
- have wild dreams and pursue them.
- care about historical keeping of documents, knowledge etc.
- be brave
