Pope Leo XIV’s Speech to Cyclists at the Giro d’Italia 2025

“Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am delighted to welcome you, the brave and dedicated cyclists of the Giro d’Italia, to the Vatican today. Your presence here is a testament to the spirit of sport and the values it embodies—perseverance, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence.

As you conclude this grueling and prestigious race, I want to express my deep admiration for your physical and mental fortitude. You have demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, qualities that inspire not only your fellow athletes but also countless young people around the world who look up to you as role models.

In the Gospel, we read about the parable of the talents, where each person is given gifts according to their abilities. You, dear cyclists, have been given the gift of athletic prowess, and you have used it to the fullest, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. This is a beautiful example of how we can all strive to use our talents to the best of our abilities, whether in sports or in any other field.

Your journey through Italy has not only been a test of physical endurance but also a spiritual pilgrimage. As you have cycled through the beautiful landscapes and historic cities of this great country, I hope that you have felt a sense of connection to the rich cultural and religious heritage that surrounds you. The Church, in particular, stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the values that can guide us in our lives.

Today, as you enter the Vatican gardens, you are welcomed by the Church, which represents God’s love for all people. I offer you my heartfelt blessings and encourage you to continue to be examples of integrity, fairness, and respect. These values are essential not only in the world of sports but in every aspect of life.

To the overall race leader, Simon Yates, and to all the classification leaders, I extend a special word of congratulations. Your achievements are a source of pride and inspiration. The replica of the leader’s pink jersey that you present to me is a symbol of your hard-earned success, and it will be cherished as a reminder of this momentous occasion.

May God bless you all, and may you always find strength and guidance in your faith. You are always welcome here in the Vatican, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact you will continue to make in the world.

Thank you, and God bless you all.”
